Up the Fonissa gorge
June 22nd, 2014
It was a long time since I had gone walking in a mountain walking, let alone done something adventurous, so when friend Nikos Aivatzidis suggested a walk inside the Fonissa Gorge I was more than eager to follow. Nikos is an experienced mountain leader and knew a little about the Fonissa Gorge from fellow canyoneers, so off he went in the early morning to explore the gorge and see if it was fit for the rest of us to follow later on. He went, he explored and came back firm in his conviction that we could penetrate it, even with children. Off we went!
The entance to the gorge is very near Daphne’s Club, roughly 15 minutes by car. From there we went walking and climbing for roughly 3 hours. There was water in some places and small pools in others, there were slippery rocks and dark passages and at the end of it all a small waterfall.
We came back home exhilarated by the scenery, proud of our efforts and eager to discover yet more! Nikos has promised to come back to explore the Cave of Hermes on mount Ziria. I’ll keep you posted!
